Aloha! At HTA elementary in ‘Ewa Beach, we are proud of our caring, supportive environment. We focus on the whole child and parents are true stakeholders in their childrens’ education. Our unique schedule allows us, as educators, to provide individualized learning. Teachers and parents work together to find the best paths to success for our students. Everything we do keeps in mind our five core values: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, character, and creativity. Our students love our enrichment classes as well as our Field Studies, when they get out into the field with our community partners to apply their learning in the real world. There is so much to look forward to at HTA in ‘Ewa Beach.

FIELD STUDIES

We learn by doing.  Our Field Studies are when students get out and apply their learning in the real world. Among other things, our blended students have sampled citrus at Lokoea Farms, learned about O‘ahu’s freshwater resources at the Hālawa xeriscape garden, met compost worms and planted seedlings at Keiki and Plow, explored a freshwater ecosystem, and made artistic clay tiles.. Our place-based program brings students into the field even more. Once a week they enjoy hands-on learning with our community partners, Watch the video below to see all that they do.

A CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY

We are proud of our positive, inviting, inclusive culture. Our small size and blended model allow us to truly focus on our students’ social and emotional development. 

In the School Quality Survey (SY 23-24), 92 percent of HTA parents and teachers reported a positive and safe school culture.

We love to celebrate throughout the year, marking those festive days as well as gathering for our ‘Ohana Days when everyone comes together for good company and relaxation or community service.

A LEARNING COACH

One of the key differences at HTA is the close relationship between family and school. All HTA students must have a Learning Coach. This is typically a parent or guardian, but can be another designated adult.

TWO PROGRAMS
BLENDED & pbHTA

We are lucky to have two great programs at our ‘Ewa Beach campus. Our original blended program has all the goodness of HTA, including our focus on hands-on work and connecting our students to their communities. The pbHTA program also follows a blended schedule, but students dive deeper into the field as they work one day a week with our community partners. Place-based HTA is at the leading edge of our innovation as students dive deeper into learning out in the field. Click the link to see our students' semester at Pu‘uhonua Farms in Kāne‘ohe.

A QUALITY EDUCATION

HTA has been WASC-accredited since 2013 and we are aligned with all Hawai‘i Common Core standards. Our core classes are math, language arts, science, and social studies. We place an emphasis on hands-on, place-based learning that really connects students to their communities and their futures. We also live by our five cores: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and character.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Our schedule gives teachers the time to support each student whether they need some extra help or an extra challenge.

During the week, we schedule time for virtual one-on-one or small-group sessions to provide additional support. There may be times when students are required to attend these support sessions.

ENRICHMENT

We have a great range of enrichment classes available before and after regular school hours. Think robotics, hip hop, Lego, or speech club. This is a great time for exploring and socializing.

Kids who are comfortable with technology and open to learning new ways to look at things will thrive at HTA. If your family isn’t comfortable with a lot of computer work or homework, HTA isn’t the place for you. It’s also fairly parent-involved, so it’s not just a “drop and run” sort of school (this is a positive for me!)

HTA is flexible but doesn’t mean you can just go run errands any time. Often there are set Zoom classes etc. and you must be prepared to prioritize school work. It can be tricky to balance. Organization is important and time management skills are imperative.

Our schedule is UNIQUE

How and where HTA students learn is different than a traditional brick and mortar school or homeschool.

SCHOOL IS FIVE DAYS A WEEK, BUT IT’S NOT ON CAMPUS EVERY DAY.

Blended learning enables students to follow their passions, it enhances relationships between students, families, and school, and allows students to engage in hands-on, experiential learning. Our unique model fosters independence and equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century.

IN CLASS

There are days when our blended program students are on campus and in class working with their teachers and peers.

ONLINE

Other days they are zooming into live virtual classes with their teachers and peers. Learning Coaches are there for support as needed. 

INDEPENDENT

And there are days when students are engaged in independent assignments or out in the real world engaging in Field Studies, experiential opportunities, or career-based learning.
