Admissions information

Parent/guardian and student must be Hawai‘i residents to apply for admission. All students enrolling or re-enrolling at HTA — as well as the parents or legal guardians of those students — must reside within the state of Hawai‘i.  Proof of residence is required during the admissions process. See Required Documents below.

Only the resident parent/legal guardian will be permitted to enroll/withdraw the student from HTA; enter into technology loan agreements; enter into the Third-Party Learning Coach agreement; and serve as the main point of communication with the school. Parents/legal guardians are expected to fulfill all obligations as listed in the School Guidebook. Students aged 18 or above on the first day of the school year, or those who attain age 18 during the school year, are still required to have a parent or legal guardian listed on all enrollment documents. In addition, please read the section on Learning Coaches below — no student may act as his/her own Learning Coach.

Unique to HTA’s blended learning model, parents/guardians are engaged as Learning Coaches. Learning Coaches play an important role in their children’s education. HTA provides training on how to best support students with their independent learning. For this reason, parents/guardians of students new to HTA are highly encouraged to watch the information video for the campus/program of interest prior to submitting an application. Parents/guardians of returning students are also highly encouraged to watch an information video if they wish to switch programs. See Program Selection below for more details.

When you apply, you will select which program you are applying for, i.e. the campus blended program, pbHTA, or Distance Learning. Once a program is selected, there is not an option to switch programs until the following school year. Each program follows the lottery process described in Applying for Admission below, but has its own computerized lottery and enrollment caps. If any parent/guardian enrolls in one program but wishes to switch to another, they will be required to cancel enrollment in the current program, start the admissions process anew, and be subject to a waitlist. 

From Jan. 17, 2025, you will be able to create your HonuHub account and register for events that will introduce you to HTA and how we do school differently. We highly encourage you to take advantage of these so you can determine if HTA is a good fit for your family.

Our admissions and enrollment process is done online in HonuHub, our school information system. You are highly encouraged to watch an information video for the campus/program of interest to learn more prior to submitting an application.

When admissions opens, you will be able to use a link on this page to create a HonuHub account if you haven’t already done so. From there, you can submit an application for admission. 

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, we will hold a computerized lottery on March 6, 2025. To be included in the computerized lottery for school year 2025-26, your application must be submitted and approved by 12 p.m. on March 5, 2025.

If your child gains a place in the lottery, you will be notified by email and required to sign and accept the offer of admission within two business days. If the offer of admission is not accepted within that period, the offer of admission will be forfeited and offered to the next applicant on the waitlist.

If a family re-applies for admission, the child’s application will be date and time stamped and processed as a late application.

Anyone not offered admission after the lottery will have their application time stamped and automatically placed on the waitlist based on their lottery number. Applicants on the waitlist will be considered on a rolling basis as spaces become available until July 9, 2025.

Once the offer of admission is accepted and the applicant is admitted, all required enrollment forms and documents must be submitted, reviewed, and approved within 10 business days to secure enrollment. When all required enrollment forms and documents have been submitted, they will be reviewed within five business days, and you will be notified via email if corrections need to be made. Failure to correct errors and receive approval of all enrollment forms and documents within 10 business days will result in the applicant forfeiting his/her seat to another applicant on the waitlist. Such forfeiture will be communicated to the family via email. If the family re-applies for admission, the child’s application will be date and time stamped and processed as a late application.

You will need to upload PDF documents into HonuHub to complete the enrollment process.  Please view the full list of required documents here. We recommend having these documents prepared ahead of time.

Applications submitted after 12 p.m. on March 5, 2025, will be considered “late” and processed based on the date and time stamp of submission. Late applications will be placed at the end of the lottery waitlist and in the order they are received without regard to any preferences described in the Admissions & Lottery policy. If a spot opens up in a specific grade level where a waitlist exists, the next eligible applicant will receive a notification. Parents/legal guardians who receive a notification of space availability will have two business days to sign and accept the offer of admission. If the offer of admission is not accepted within two business days after notification, this will result in the applicant forfeiting his/her seat to another applicant on the waitlist. Such forfeiture will be communicated to the family via email.

Once enrollment closes, any in-progress applications will expire. New applications will not be accepted until admissions re-opens the following year. Prior year applications do not roll over to the next school year. If you were on the waitlist for 2024-25, you must submit a new application for 2025-26. 

After fully enrolling, you will be prompted to pay the $45 Student Fee (per student) in HonuHub via PayPal. The Student Fee helps cover the cost of basic classroom supplies, single-use academic supplies, curricular software and materials, and an HTA T-shirt. Families who complete HTA’s Application for Reduced Fees may qualify to have this fee subsidized. The student fee is fully refundable should you choose to cancel your child’s enrollment at HTA next year before the first day of school.

If you cannot pay the student fee at this time, you will be given the option to pay later and still be able to complete the enrollment process.  

Please note: The Student Fee must be paid before participating in the computer loan program or borrowing a loaner for the day. In addition, students will not be able to participate in activities such as Field Studies, dances, retreats, graduation, prom, etc., until payment is received. Mahalo.

As part of HTA’s commitment to technology, students have the opportunity to participate in our optional computer loan program. The Chromebook and its accessories are the responsibility of the student and parents. You can sign up for the program after you have enrolled. There is a refundable $135 insurance deposit per computer, and a non-refundable processing fee of $5.
Families are responsible for the return of the computer at the end of the school year or upon withdrawal. Refunds are subject to the condition of the computer upon return and at the discretion of HTA staff. Families who complete our Application for Reduced Fees may qualify for a lower rate on the deposit.
