Welina. Welcome to the Distance Learning program and thank you for your interest. It’s important to know that our enrollment and schedule are separate from HTA’s campus-based program. While all of our classes are virtual, we know it is essential to develop a sense of belonging and community, and we coordinate opportunities for social interaction and experiential learning. Our experienced and caring faculty and staff focus on the individual learner, encouraging students to pursue their own interests, strive for excellence in their academic studies, and demonstrate our core values by contributing to each of our island communities.

STUDENT SUPPORT IS BUILT IN
HTA has been a leader in virtual education for over a decade. Our teachers are experienced and caring, and they know how to keep online classes engaging. They may use interactive whiteboards, polls and quizzes, live chat, guest speakers, video and audio streaming, breakout rooms, and more.
Our unique schedule gives our teachers the time to provide individualized support. Their mission is to ensure that school makes sense to their students and that they understand how to learn as well as what to learn.
INDEPENDENCE
There are students who absolutely thrive in the more independent virtual environment. Distance learning gives students more options to work at their own pace.
A QUALITY EDUCATION
CAREER-BASED LEARNING
Our innovative high school Career-Based Learning program allows students to gain skills and experience out in the community — while earning credit! Our students are environmental stewards, media mavens, entrepreneurs, scientists, and more. Through partnerships with local organizations, mentorships, and hands-on projects, they learn what professionals do, but also how they think, collaborate, and solve problems that don’t have a clear answer.
MORE THAN A PARENT.A LEARNING COACH
One of the key differences in the HTA model is the close relationship between family and school. All HTA students must have a Learning Coach. This is typically a parent or guardian, but can be another designated adult.
BUILDING COMMUNITY
We work hard to build a sense of community for our virtual families. Our quarterly community days for grades 4-8 are all about having fun together. These are held on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island. We take on design challenges and enjoy outdoor activities and games. These get-togethers forge bonds that really carry over into our online classes.
In high school, there are required events each semester, along with optional career and community service opportunities on each island.
We also offer virtual clubs, and Distance Learning students are welcome to attend campus-based events.
In addition to our academic staff, HTA provides counseling support, and every middle and high school student belongs to an advisory class that meets throughout the year. Advisory helps build belonging and purpose, and advisory teachers are advocates for their students.
UNIQUE SCHEDULES
School is five days a week, and students should expect to be fully engaged for the full school day, but our families enjoy less commute times, more family time, and more time to explore interests outside the classroom.
We have Distance Learning students who are full on into chess, robotics, riflery, body boarding, and more.
COLLEGE & CAREER
HTA’s College and Career team works with students and their families to map out a best-fit plan for each individual, whether you’re on a career track or a college route.
Students can get ahead by taking Running Start classes, which allow them to challenge themselves and earn both high school and college credit. They can also participate in student leadership, community service, and the National Honor Society. And our graduation ceremony on O‘ahu rocks!
