Just a few things that make Kona no ka ‘oi

OUR TEACHERS
& STAFF

Simply the best.

ROBOTS
& DRONES

We are totally into robots and drones. Elementary students learn to code and manipulate robot mice. Middle school students continue exploring through clubs. And high schoolers can earn their drone pilot certificate.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENRICHMENT REEL

Our middle school students greatly enjoy their exploratory wheel time on Wednesdays and Fridays. Activities may involve P.E. and team sports, robotics, foreign languages, gaming, theatre, and mixed visual art. This is a great time for students to have fun, socialize, and get to know others on campus.

OUR ISLAND CULTURE

Our students learn the content and skills necessary to thrive at college or in the workforce, but we know it is important to integrate our culture. Our Kona students interact with the wahi pana, or sacred places, and learn from cultural practitioners who share their ‘ike and engage them in hands-on practice, problem-solving, and solution-oriented outcomes to increase the wellbeing of the whole kaiāulu (community).

OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS

HTA’s community partners add richness and relevance to our students’ learning. At HTA Kona we are blessed through our partnerships, such as that with Hawai‘i Keiki Museum. HKM truly shares our passion for project-based learning. Kona students have created exhibit murals and exhibits, and helped uncover a geology treasure trove. Stay tuned.

OUR NEW CAMPUS!

We are getting ready to move into our brand new campus, which has been specially designed and built for how we do school differently. We are so excited for our forever hale, which has everything from a fully equipped science lab, to a Makerspace with 3D printing, to a GOLD ceiling! Yup, gold.

FIELD STUDIES

Our students are regularly spotted in the field as they connect their learning to the real world. All students spend time at a private garden where we focus on ‘āina sustainability, learn how to plant and tend crops, harvest, and prepare traditional foods such as laulau, and learn Hawaiian protocols and oli.
Our students can also be found studying kāheka (tide pools), conducting water quality surveys, planting native species, or learning Hawaiian wayfinding practices.

CAREER-BASED LEARNING

Our innovative Career-Based Learning program allows high school students to gain skills and experience out in the community while earning credit. Kona students have made movies, created museum installations, and run their own businesses — one such example is Beachside Horse, which is owned by student Kayah L. who paints model horse replicas to order. Have we said how amazing our students are?

THE GOOD TIMES

From middle school activity nights to high school prom, we like to have fun. Kona student leadership, staff, and our awesome parent ‘ohana committee lay on the good times including movie and game nights, spirit weeks, school dances, a boo-ti-ful Halloween celebration, and our annual march in the Kailua-Kona Christmas parade.

KONA CAMPUS DIRECTOR • mpaakaula@myhta.org

Aloha, ʻo Makala Paakaula koʻu inoa, ke poʻokumu o ke kahua kula HTA ma Kona. I have worked in Hawai‘i schools since 2000. I became an educator because I am passionate about increasing student access to Hawaiian ʻike and ʻōlelo and partnering our cultural strengths with the skills of the 21st century. I was born and raised on O‘ahu and earned my bachelor’s and master’s in education at UH-Mānoa. After teaching for 11 years, I was an administrator at Castle High School and Pūʻōhala School. I joined HTA in 2022 and am excited to work with our whole community to build a program that emphasizes the importance of authentic learning and assessment, place-based, project-based, and culturally responsive education. I love the beach, and hiking (waterfalls!), and gardening and plants. It’s so amazing when you can enjoy the flowers and food you’ve grown yourself.
