Seeing the light

Our Kīhei high school students had plenty of “woah” moments when astronomer JD Armstrong visited to show them the light.

Armstrong is the education and outreach specialist at the University of Hawai‘i’s Institute for Astronomy on Maui. His work includes research on exoplanets, asteroids, comets, stellar objects, and double stars. He talked to our STEM students about the electromagnetic spectrum, how our eyes see light, and how astronomers use it to decipher the makeup of distance objects in our solar system.
