KAUAI

WHAT MAKES HTA LĪHU‘E AWESOME

THE HANDS-ON PROJECTS

Kaua‘i students learn about physics while building and racing mouse-trap cars or parachuting eggs to safety. They design and iterate in our Makerspace. They visit important and historic sites on Kaua‘i and O‘ahu. They master micropipettes and separate DNA via gel electrophoresis. They insert glowing proteins into bacteria. We learn best by doing.

FIELD STUDIES

Our students are regularly spotted in the field studying ecosystems specific to Kōke‘e and marine estuaries, visiting cultural sites and the Kaua‘i Museum, learning about electricity at KIUC, investigating coral reefs at ‘Anini, learning about sustainable farming practices, and more. This builds connections between classroom learning and the real world.

Our middle school pbHTA program takes this a step further as students spend more time working out at our community partner sites.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Our blended schedule gives teachers the time to support each student whether they need some extra help or an extra challenge.

There may be times when students are required to attend support sessions. For middle school students, this is during Momentum Lab on Mondays. For high school, this is during virtual office hours on Fridays.

A CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY

We are proud of our positive, inviting, inclusive culture. Our small size and blended model allow us to truly focus on our students’ social and emotional development.

In the School Quality Survey (SY 23-24), 92 percent of HTA parents and teachers reported a positive and safe school culture.

From middle school activity nights to high school prom, we like to have fun. We enjoy movie and game nights, spirit weeks, school dances, a boo-ti-ful Halloween celebration, and loads of senior year celebrations.

MORE THAN A PARENT.
A LEARNING COACH

One of the key differences in the HTA model is the close relationship between family and school. All HTA students must have a Learning Coach. This is typically a parent or guardian, but can be another designated adult.

A highlight at the end of each semester, is when our students lead a conference with their Learning Coaches and advisor. These conferences are great practice for future job interviews. Students are encouraged to dress for the role as they share what they have achieved and reflect on their progress.

A QUALITY EDUCATION

HTA has been WASC-accredited since 2013 and we are aligned with all Hawai‘i Common Core standards. Our core classes are math, language arts, science, and social studies. We place an emphasis on hands-on, place-based learning that really connects students to their communities and their futures. We also live by our five cores: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and character.

View our curriculum guides for middle and high school.

CAREER-BASED LEARNING

Our innovative Career-Based Learning program allows high school students to gain skills and experience out in the real world while earning credit. We’ve had students building experience at a local orthodontist, in an architecture firm, a veterinary clinic, a local bakery, at Kauai Labs, IT Kaua‘i, and Rainbow Roots Farms.

MOMENTUM LAB MONDAYS

Momentum Lab offers optional open-campus time on Mondays — it’s a focused place to work, catch up, or push ahead. Students can get one-on-one support from their teachers, collaborate with peers on group projects, or find a quiet zone to focus on assignments.

ENRICHMENT & CLUBS

From cooking, drama, and typing to board games, autocad, 3D printing, jewelry making, and sewing there are enriching opportunities to engage all students.

COLLEGE & CAREER

HTA’s College and Career team works with students and their families to map out a best-fit plan for each individual, whether you’re on a career track or a college route.

Students can get ahead by taking Running Start classes, which allow them to challenge themselves and earn both high school and college credit. They can also participate in student leadership, community service, and the National Honor Society. And our graduation ceremony on O‘ahu rocks!

Kelly
Friendly and inclusive, the HTA community is a wonderful example of how a school culture can be cultivated in a positive and encouraging environment.
Kelly Voyer, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Garrison
Best academic decision I’ve made for my student.
Garrison, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Kristen Jung
I love how engaged, effective, and enthusiastic the teachers are.
Kristen Jung, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Andrea
We love the opportunities to be out in the community, even though it requires a lot of planning and driving. The community days are enriching because what is being taught corresponds well with the in-class lessons.
Andrea Cotter, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Ana Leonardo-Mertens
I love the foreign language program. Our student is taking Japanese and the immersion is unique.
Ana Leonardo-Mertens, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Shanna
Your child has the one-on-one help from teachers they can’t get in a regular school.
Shanna Rivera, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Juice Aguirre
We really love that pbHTA gets our child out of the classroom. We are true believers in that children really learn by being out in the field. It shakes up the week and I think helps with focus on the days they actually go to school.
Juice Aguirre, Kaua‘i pbHTA Learning Coach
Kelly
My child has become a curious learner again and being curious in life is such a gift.
Kelly Voyer, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Rie
Students who are comfortable with technology and can learn independently do well at HTA, especially with support from a parent or family. Students without family support or who struggle with self-directed learning may find it more challenging.
Rie Ombrello, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Angela Bresnahan
I was proud when I learned my daughter’s photography assignment was to represent addiction on the island through photography. It is making her truly contemplate the causes and impacts of addiction within our community. It is extremely difficult to capture in photographs, but that made her really think about it.
Angela Bresnahan, Kaua‘i Learning Coach
Mélissa
Families who are engaged in their child’s education would definitely appreciate HTA’s model. Compared to a full time in-person school where most parents don’t know what their children are learning, HTA is extremely transparent and makes sure that the parents/Learning Coaches know exactly where the student stands and what he/she needs to work on (every assignment is posted online).
Mélissa Tremblay, Kaua‘i Learning Coach

EWA BEACH

WHAT MAKES HTA ‘EWA BEACH AWESOME

THE HANDS-ON PROJECTS

‘Ewa Beach students in both our blended and pbHTA programs design, build, test, and explore. UN, publication party, wax museum, Maker’s Fair. We definitely learn by doing.

FIELD STUDIES

Our Field Studies are when students get out and apply their learning in the real world. Among other things, our students have sampled citrus at Lokoea Farms, learned about O‘ahu’s freshwater resources at the Hālawa xeriscape garden, met compost worms and planted seedlings at Keiki and Plow, explored a freshwater ecosystem, made artistic clay tiles, and worked in the lo‘i and learned about invasive species at Kualoa Ranch. We learn by doing.

ENRICHMENT

We have an awesome range of enrichment classes available before and after regular school hours. Think robotics, hip hop, Lego, or speech club. This is a great time for exploring and socializing.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Our blended schedule gives teachers the time to support each student whether they need some extra help or an extra challenge.

During the week, we schedule time for virtual one-on-one or small-group sessions to provide additional support. There may be times when students are required to attend these support sessions.

You can see these on the weekly schedule for both our blended and pbHTA programs.

We love to celebrate throughout the year, marking those festive days as well as gathering for our ‘Ohana Days when everyone comes together for good company and relaxation or community service.

Mallory Banks
Kids who are comfortable with technology and open to learning new ways to look at things will thrive at HTA. If your family isn’t comfortable with a lot of computer work or homework, HTA isn’t the place for you. It’s also fairly parent-involved, so it’s not just a “drop and run” sort of school (this is a positive for me!)
Mallory Banks, ‘Ewa Beach pbHTA Learning Coach
L.M.
This school is a wonderful, educational environment, with lots of support from teachers and staff, giving my child many opportunities to learn and grow.
L.M., ‘Ewa Beach Learning Coach
Mallory Banks
We love the flexibility of the schedule and all the projects they get to work on. Even in middle school, the learning is so hands-on they can really see how it’s applicable in real life.
Mallory Banks, ‘Ewa Beach pbHTA Learning Coach
Lorraine Yuen
HTA is a great school for those who are self-starters or have high amounts of creativity or don’t fit the typical brick and mortar school model.
Lorraine Yuen, ‘Ewa Beach Learning Coach
Mallory Banks
HTA is flexible but doesn’t mean you can just go run errands any time. Often there are set Zoom classes etc. and you must be prepared to prioritize school work. It can be tricky to balance. Organization is important and time management skills are imperative.
Mallory Banks, ‘Ewa Beach pbHTA Learning Coach
Holly Latimer
... My younger daughter has had amazing elementary teachers. She has been encouraged to push herself in critical thinking and is supported in her advanced education. I also have been impressed with the lower grade teachers on their patience and communication in dealing with behavioral issues.
Holly Latimer, ‘Ewa Beach Learning Coach

Waipahu

What makes HTA Waipahu awesome

THE HANDS-ON PROJECTS

Waipahu students design, build, test, and explore. They engineer and launch rockets carrying raw eggs. They simulate geological processes that melt rocks. They separate out DNA. They go into space to observe a comet. And, just saying, there's a lot of exploding that goes on in high school chemistry. We definitely learn by doing.

Elise
It’s like the Google of public schools. You teach to learn, not to test. You focus on the child, not the grade. Also the entire framework is very much like college so it’s an easier transition.
Elise Hopfe, Waipahu Learning Coach
Lynelle
I believe a student who can thrive at HTA is self-motivated, takes initiative, has strong parent support and involvement, and can manage their time well. It can be challenging for students who lack these supports.
Lynelle McElhannon, Waipahu Learning Coach
Michele
Best decision I have ever made for my child’s education.
Michele, Waipahu Learning Coach

The flexibility allows my son to pursue extracurriculars like swimming, surfing, solid friendships, and spiritual growth. It also causes him to be more diligent in getting his work done so he is able to pursue those things. All of this is creating a well-rounded young man.
Jennifer Smith, Waipahu Learning Coach
Mina
This self-directed model opens up windows of time for creativity in what they are passionate about, sleep, and self care. They are also being treated not as children, but as capable humans, which sets an expectation for their behavior.

I love that HTA is the most academically challenging lower school in West Maui in our experience and that, because it is small, kids from every grade level become friends and learn from one another. I also believe that because it is small there is less of a chance of bullying and all the staff get to know every child.

I drive 3 hours 5 days a week to bring my Keiko to HTA. I am supported by my family and friends, teachers and staff to make it all work. It isn't easy but it's worth it.

Field Studies allow parents and students to get to know each other.

(Students) must be self-motivated, need to be ready to take on tech. Students who need high school interaction each day would not do well. Families must also be ready to assist their student on Zoom days and project days.

I love that HTA focuses on the whole student with an emphasis on real world experiences and not just a strict emphasis on academics alone.

They treat you like family. It’s really set apart from normal school vs. HTA. Their primary focus is the child and how they can support them and help them thrive in every area.

Kellie
I love how organized it is, how supportive and communicative the administration is, and the flexibility it offers us.

I really LOVE the staff, especially the teachers. They are attentive, proactive instead of reactive, helpful, and communicate well with me and my child.

This is my first year but I feel that the school provides a variety of venues for students and parents to connect. For example through community days, celebrations, and clubs.

Parents have to be actively engaged with their children’s learning. Asking questions and providing support where needed.

HTA is uniquely designed to meet your child’s individual needs with ALOHA.

It removes distractions and helps your child stay focused on learning. I’d say it offers a higher level of education. Parents and teachers work closely together to support each child’s growth — helping them reach, and even exceed, their full potential. The teachers and director are dedicated and genuinely committed to each student’s success, always striving to bring out the best in them.

My student has been much more successful in managing her time because of the HTA model. She keeps on top of her assignments and Canvas and HonuHub really help her manage her time well. In a more traditional school setting, she had less time to do her assignments and was left tired to pursue other interests outside of school.

I think a student who has dreams and goals that involve more time and flexibility thrives in this environment. A family who has parents who are both working full time may struggle more because it does take some more time on the parents’ part I think.

Distance Learning allows my students to participate in athletic activities throughout the island. Wouldn’t be possible without it.

There needs to be some Learning Coach engagement to follow up with the student’s progress. The technical aspects can have a learning curve for some but that should not stop a student from being an HTA student. The less successful may be a family that wants to drop students off all school days and have little or no engagement with the student’s curriculum or activities.

One day my child attends their class as normal, but instead of a worksheet they are introduced to music production software. I watch them go from hesitant clicks to layering beats and melodies that sounded like something out of their favorite game. By the end of the lesson, they had a track they couldn’t wait to play for classmates. His pride wasn’t from just “schoolwork” it was from discovering a new passion and skill.

I really appreciated the student-led conferences. My child did a wonderful job with her presentation of her learning not just to me but other parents. It was fantastic.

I think kids who are good self starters and self-motivated would thrive the most. Kids who want, or need, to do school differently than a typical public K-12 program. Kids who need a lot of constant guidance, at every step, and have a hard time staying on task may have a hard time.
